The cessation of menstruation, or the menopause, can be a difficult time of life for many women. Various symptoms may be experienced including hot flushes, night sweats, vaginal dryness, depression and low self-esteem. With HRT being one of the most heavily prescribed of all drugs, these are clearly very common problems.
The herb Black Cohosh may offer an alternative to traditional drug therapy. Used by the Native Americans as a remedy for “female“ complaints, Black Cohosh has been the subject of many scientific studies. It appears that many of the symptoms experienced during the menopause are due to a lack of oestrogen from the ovaries and a high level of Luteinising Hormone from the pituitary gland( the master gland located at the base of the brain).Studies have demonstrated the ability of Black Cohosh to lower Luteinising hormone and increase oestrogen levels. Research studies have compared the effectiveness of Black Cohosh with HRT medication. The groups of women given Black Cohosh experienced significantly better results in reducing hot flushes, vaginal dryness, depression, and many other menopausal symptoms than the group using HRT.
